Extract:
In ancient times, Fethiye was known as Telmessos, a significant settlement located close to active fault lines linking the Aegean and the Mediterranean. This geography brought prosperity through trade and access — but also repeated destruction. While iconic landmarks such as the rock-cut tombs and the ancient theatre endured, the city itself was often forced to start over.
The Earthquake That Redefined the Town
The most dramatic turning point came on April 25, 1957. A powerful earthquake, close to magnitude 7, struck Fethiye and its surroundings. The town, then known as Makri, was almost entirely destroyed. Hundreds of lives were lost, and thousands of residents were left without shelter. Those who witnessed it describe an unsettling stillness afterward — a once-busy town reduced to silence.
This disaster became a clear dividing line in Fethiye’s history. Nothing would look the same again.
