Present requirements to obtain a Touristic / Short-term residence

Here’s an overview of the current requirements (2025–2026) to obtain a Touristic / Short-Term Residence Permit (Turistik / Kısa Dönem İkamet İzni) in Türkiye (applicable if you are a foreign national and want to stay longer than a visa allows).

      Stricter Administrative Interpretation:
In recent years, Turkish immigration authorities have become much more restrictive with tourist residence applications — especially for first-time tourist permits — and may reject applications unless the tourism purpose is strongly documented.

      Basic Purpose and Eligibility

A short-term residence permit allows a foreigner to stay in Türkiye beyond the visa-free or visa period for certain temporary purposes – including tourism. It does not grant the right to work.

      Core Requirements (Present 2026)

Valid Entry & Legal Entry Status
You must be in Türkiye legally (e.g., entered on a visa or via a visa-exempt entry that allows applying for residence).
If your visa does not allow residence applications (e.g., some tourist visa types), you may need to have entered on an entry type that permits residence application.

Purpose of Stay: Clear Tourism Objective
For a touristic permit, you must demonstrate a genuine tourism plan (detailed itinerary, travel plans, flight & accommodation bookings). Generic or vague statements are often not accepted.

      Residence Address Proof
A registered address in Türkiye must be declared.
      You usually need:
A rental contract (notarized) registered in your name or
If staying with someone else, a commitment letter (taahhütname) from them plus documentation showing their address.
Make sure the address is not in “closed neighbourhoods” where new registrations are restricted.

      Passport Requirements
A valid passport with sufficient remaining validity (often beyond the period you request).
Notarized Turkish translation of your passport is usually required.

      Health Insurance
Valid health insurance covering your entire intended residency period is mandatory.
International insurance can be accepted if it meets Turkish standards, but local Turkish insurance policies are often easier to use.

      Financial Means / Bank Statements
Proof of sufficient and regular financial means to support your stay is required.
While exact amounts can vary, authorities increasingly expect evidence of stable income or funds sufficient to cover your stay (some guidance suggests at least 1.5 times the Turkish minimum wage income or equivalent savings).

      Application Form & Fees
Residence permit application form (completed online via the e-ikamet system).
Receipt of residence permit fee and card fee payments must be included.

      Biometric Photos
Usually 4 biometric passport photos are required.

      Criminal Record / General Eligibility
No serious criminal record incompatible with public order and safety.
Authorities may check background and may reject if there are public order concerns.

      Closed Neighbourhoods:
Some districts (especially in big cities) are closed to new residence registrations; applications from those addresses may be automatically rejected.

      Renewals:
Renewal requirements (if you already have a permit) include updated proof of financial means, valid health insurance, and continued address registration.

      Typical Validity & Timing
Short‐term residence permits for tourism are typically valid up to 1 year.
Extensions/renewals should be applied for at least 60 days before expiry.
